この記事は、筆者が留学中に使用した英単語やフレーズを紹介していきます。
英語の勉強というと、単語量と言われることもありますが、事実正しくはあります。
ただし、解釈は「幅広い表現」が使えるかどうかです。
難しい単語を覚える場面も必要ですが、日常でも学校でも、中学レベルの単語で作られるイディオムやフレーズが頻繁に出てきます。
私が留学生にお勧めしたいのは、この簡単な単語で横に表現を広げていくことです。

イディオム・フレーズ
hit the gym
meaning : ジムに行く
Sample sentence : I am going to hit the gym today, wanna join?
hit the book
Meaning : 勉強する
Sample sentence : Seriously, I gonna hit the book before the exam.
up in the air
Meaning : 予定がわからない
Sample sentence :
Friend " You must be excited to next weekend. I remember you have a date with your new girl friend!"
me: " hahaha...not it's up in the air.... I saw she was dating with Mike last Sunday.."
friend : " oh... I can't say anything..."
look like a million dollars
Meaning : とても美しい
Sample sentence : wow.. this lake looks like a million dollars!
light up my day
Meaning : あなたといると楽しい（直訳：あなたは私の毎日を明るくしてくれる）
Sample sentence : you light up my day!
bookworm
Meaning : 本の虫
Sample sentence : Hi, I'm moka. I like reading books and looking back to my childhood, I've been a bookworm.
it is what it is
Meaning : それはそれ
Sample sentence : It is what it is.
head above the water
Meaning : トラブルを起こさない
Sample sentence : Today is a special day for me, so please head above the water.
under the weather
Meaning : 体調が悪い
Sample sentence : Can I cancel today's drinking party? I'm kinda under the weather.
when pigs fly
Meaning : ありそうもない（豚が飛んだら）
Sample sentence : I can pass the exam with full-score when pigs fly.
get on the same page
Meaning : 同じラインに立つ（全員が同じベースで）
Sample sentence : Before beginning our project, I think we should get on the same page.
out of the blue
Meaning : 驚いて（いい意味でも悪い時でも使えます）
Sample sentence : I was out of the blue because my brother ate my ice cream.
Night owl
Meaning : 夜型のタイプ（夜に活発になるタイプの人）
Sample sentence : I am a night owl so that it's really hard to get up early..
To pull someone's leg
Meaning : からかう
Sample sentence : He told me he was a son of President, but he was just pulling my leg.
Piece of cake
Meaning : 超絶簡単
Sample sentence : An exam was piece of cake even last exam of the semester.
Early bird
Meaning : 早起き・朝から活動するタイプの人
Sample sentence : I am not an early bird but will be from next month that my target for next month.
It's not a rocket science
Meaning : そんな難しいことじゃない
Sample sentence : Whatever you do to enhance your daily life is just to wake up early. It's not a rocket science.
